Once the plants come back in from the deck and the furnace starts running, houseplants in Alberta spend six or seven months in dry air and short days. Whether and how much to feed them in that stretch is a question we get at the counter, and the honest answer is that the manufacturer prints the rate and the interval on every bottle and tray. This guide pulls those directions together for the Miracle-Gro indoor range we list, so you can feed by the label rather than by guesswork. Everything below is quoted or paraphrased from Scotts Canada's product information; Scotts itself notes that its web pages are not the product label and that the label on the package must be read and followed.
Which Miracle-Gro indoor product is which
Scotts sells five indoor plant foods in Canada, and they are not interchangeable. The general Indoor Plant Food is a liquid with an NPK ratio of 1-1-1 in a 236 mL pump bottle. The Tropical Plant Food is 1-0.5-1 and lists the micronutrients magnesium, manganese, iron, copper and zinc; Scotts describes it as formulated for tropical plants, which it says have different nutrient requirements from other houseplants. The Succulent Plant Food is 0.5-1-1, a foam-like formula applied straight from the pump onto the soil. The Orchid Plant Food Mist carries the very dilute analysis 0.02-0.02-0.02 and is misted onto the plant rather than mixed into water. The Indoor Plant Food Spikes are a slow-release 6-12-6 in a 31 g tray that Scotts says feeds for up to two months.
The NPK numbers are the label's own statement of nitrogen, phosphate and potash content. Read them as a description of what is in the bottle, not as a promise about what the plant will do.
Indoor Plant Food 1-1-1: pumps per pot
Scotts gives two ways to apply the general liquid. Directly to the soil, apply 1 pump for small pots (up to 15 cm / 6 in diameter) or 2 pumps for larger pots (over 15 cm / 6 in diameter), then water as usual. With a watering can, mix 4 pumps per 1 L of water and water as usual. Scotts directs repeating the feeding once a week. The label does not print a separate winter rate, so a plant that is being fed through the winter is fed at the same rate and interval; the decision about whether to keep feeding a resting plant is one to make plant by plant.

Tropical Plant Food 1-0.5-1: watering-can rate
For the tropical formula Scotts directs wearing gloves before using the product, then adding 4 pumps per litre of water in a watering can and watering as you normally would. Scotts describes it as formulated for tropical plants; the plant list is the manufacturer's, so check the bottle for the plants it names.

Succulent Plant Food 0.5-1-1: straight from the pump
For cacti and succulents Scotts directs wearing gloves before handling the product, noting that it can cause skin irritation, then applying 1 pump for small pots or 2 pumps for larger pots directly to the soil and watering as usual. Of the three pump liquids it is the one with the lowest nitrogen number.

Orchid Plant Food Mist: spray, do not mix
The orchid product is ready to use. Scotts directs lightly spraying the leaves and roots, watering the orchids regularly, and repeating the process once per week. The precautions Scotts lists are to read the label before use, to wear gardening gloves because there is potential for skin irritation, and to keep the product out of reach of children and pets.

Indoor Plant Food Spikes 6-12-6: the winter interval is on the card
The spikes are the one indoor product whose label prints a different winter interval. Scotts directs making a hole in moist soil with the Miracle-Aerator spike supplied in the tray, halfway between the plant stem and the pot rim, placing one spike in each hole and pressing it down until it is covered by soil. The ruler on the edge of the card is used to measure the pot and determine the number of spikes needed. In spring and summer Scotts directs replacing the spikes every 30 days; in fall and winter, every 60 days. Water the plants regularly as required. Scotts describes the spikes as for all indoor flowering and foliage houseplants.

A winter feeding routine built from the labels
Put together, the labels give a simple routine. Pick the product that matches the plant type, apply the printed number of pumps or spikes for the pot size, and keep to the printed interval: weekly for the liquids and the orchid mist, every 60 days for the spikes from fall through winter. Wear gloves for the products whose labels say so, and keep all of them away from children and pets. Storage directions are printed on each package. If a plant is dormant and you choose to feed less often, that is a judgment the label leaves to you; what the label does fix is the rate per application.
