Tattoo ink comes in tins, tubes and bottles, and the roll-on is the tidiest of the three at chute-side. The ball tip puts the fluid exactly on the piece of ear you are about to pinch instead of loading a brush out of an open tin that collects hair and manure by mid-morning. Black is the usual choice on light or unpigmented ears, where it stands out plainly under a flashlight years later. Producers working with dark-pigmented ears more often reach for green paste, which shows up better against that skin, so pick the colour to suit the animals you run rather than out of habit. The order of operations matters more than the product. Wipe the inner ear clean and dry, roll the fluid on, pinch, then work more fluid into the punctures with a thumb or a small brush so it sits in the holes rather than on top of them. A 57 ml bottle covers a good number of head and fits in a coat pocket beside the plier.
