A tattoo outfit is only as flexible as the characters you own. These are 8 mm, or five sixteenths of an inch, characters cut for the Ketchum 201 series pliers, bought singly so you can fill out a set rather than replace a whole one. The usual reasons to buy loose characters are a herd prefix you have run out of, a digit that has gone missing off the shop bench, or a set where the number you use most has worn dull ahead of the rest. Buying one at a time is a lot cheaper than a new outfit and keeps a working plier working. The characters seat into the head of the plier and are held in place ready for the pinch. Check them for packed ink and dried paste before you start a run of calves, and clean them out with a wire brush, because a plugged character is what turns a readable tattoo into a smudge you cannot argue with a breed association about later.
