Details
Sheep and goat ears are smaller and thinner than a cow's, and there is less room to place a mark between the veins. A single-row plier suits that job better than a stacked two-row head, because the whole tattoo sits in one clean line along the flat of the ear. The 201B holds up to six characters in 8 mm size, or five sixteenths of an inch, in one row. Characters change quickly, and the chisel-point pin design lays down a mark that stays legible rather than blurring into a blot as the animal grows. The grip is shaped for repeated squeezing, which matters when you are working through a pen of lambs and your hand is already cold. Clean the inside of the ear, apply ink, place the plier between the cartilage ribs and squeeze once. Rub ink in afterward and let it be. A tattoo is a permanent management and identification mark, and it does not take the place of an approved traceability tag.
