This is the nut that holds the shaft onto the handle, complete with its insert. Small part, large job, and it is the piece that quietly wears out on a prod that has been in service a few seasons. A shaft that goes loose partway through a run, or that will not tighten up no matter how hard you crank on it, is usually telling you the nut and insert are done rather than the handle. It fits standard Hot-Shot fiberglass and flexible shafts. Keeping a spare in the drawer costs very little and saves an afternoon, because these disappear into bedding the instant they come off in a chute. When you fit it, run the shaft in square and snug it by hand rather than reefing on it with pliers. Overtightening is the fastest way back to buying another one. Keep the threads free of sand and manure, and check the nut whenever you swap shafts. If the shaft has any play at the handle, deal with it then instead of at four in the afternoon with a full alley behind you.
