Horses change hands, get hauled long distances and occasionally go missing off a pasture, and a brand or a description only carries an owner so far. An implanted microchip gives a horse a number that travels with it and cannot be swapped, faded or cut off. These are Datamars SLIM chips in the T-SL 8010 configuration for equine, deer and elk. The chip runs at 134.2 kHz with a 64-bit code conforming to ISO 11784 and 11785, so a standard ISO scanner will read it, and the polymer casing is bio-compatible. Each unit is supplied pre-loaded in a sterile stainless steel needle. In horses the chip is placed in the nuchal ligament partway down the left side of the neck, which is where scanners are checked first at events, clinics and border crossings. Record the number in your own files at the time of implant and register it, so the chip means something the day somebody scans a loose horse.
