Ear tags come out and collars come off. A microchip stays where it is put, which is why permanent identification for dogs, cats and other companion animals is done under the skin rather than on the outside. The SLIM chip measures roughly 0.43 by 0.06 inches and is housed in a bio-compatible polymer casing. It operates at 134.2 kHz on a 64-bit code conforming to ISO 11784 and 11785, so it reads on standard ISO scanners, and it carries no battery. Each chip comes pre-loaded in a sterile 14-gauge stainless steel needle. Implantation is a single subcutaneous injection between the shoulder blades, done in seconds with the animal standing or held. This 25-pack size suits a clinic, a rescue, a breeder working through a litter or an acreage that chips everything that comes onto the place. Register the codes as you go, because an unregistered chip that scans to nothing gets an animal no closer to home.
