The pairing of ivermectin and praziquantel exists because ivermectin, for all its breadth, does nothing to tapeworm. Praziquantel does, and tapeworm is worth taking seriously: burdens build quietly, do not show up reliably on a standard fecal egg count, and are associated with impaction colic at the ileocecal junction. Most Canadian programs work in a praziquantel dose once or twice a year for exactly that reason. The rest of the coverage is what you expect from ivermectin — large and small strongyles including the migrating larval stages, ascarids, pinworms, hairworms, lungworm, and bots. A single syringe treats a horse up to the weight printed on the barrel, so set the ring against an actual weight rather than a guess. A weight tape is cheap; a half dose is not, because it is how resistant populations get built. Deliver the paste well back over the tongue and keep the head up briefly. Horses are good at holding a mouthful and depositing it in the bedding thirty seconds later, so watch that it goes down before you walk away. Read the label for cautions on foals and on thin or debilitated horses, and follow it for weight limits. Keep it well away from dogs, since ivermectin at horse doses is dangerous to some other species, and pick up anything a horse drops. Store above freezing and out of reach of children. If a horse is losing condition or showing colic signs, that is a call to your veterinarian, not a reason for another tube.
