Details
Hoof abscesses and wire cuts do not wait for a convenient week. Having a poultice pad already in the cupboard is the difference between dressing something the hour you find it and driving to town first. The pad measures 20 by 40 cm, about eight inches by sixteen, and the inner layer carries boric acid and tragacanth. It is meant to be cut down to whatever the injury needs, so one pad can cover a small wound now and leave material for the next one. It is used on horses and on dogs. It can go on wet or dry. Soaked in hot water, soaked in cold water, or applied straight from the pack, depending on what the situation calls for. However it goes on, it needs a bandage or cohesive wrap over top to hold position. Store the unused pads in their packaging and out of the damp so they stay clean. Anything that is not settling down within a day or two, or a foot the horse will not weight, is a call to your veterinarian rather than another dressing.
