Fish oil fed as a fat and omega-3 source, in a 4 L jug. Horses and other stock on hay and grain rations get plenty of omega-6 and very little omega-3, and fish oil is one of the few practical feed ingredients that shifts that balance. The visible result most people notice is coat and skin condition; the reason nutritionists reach for it is the fatty acid profile and the extra energy density that comes with any added fat. Introduce it slowly. Any oil added abruptly to a ration can loosen manure and put a horse off its feed, and fish oil in particular has a smell that fussy horses object to. Start well under the target amount, work up over a week or two, and mix it thoroughly into feed that will actually get eaten rather than pouring it on top. Storage is the real discipline with fish oil. It goes rancid, and rancid oil is both unpalatable and worse than useless nutritionally. Keep the jug closed and out of the sun and heat — a cool shop or tack room, not a truck box or a spot where afternoon sun hits it. If it smells sharp or paint-like rather than fishy, it has turned. A 4 L jug should be sized to what you will use in a reasonable window, not bought ahead by the season. If you are feeding a fortified commercial ration or a supplement that already carries added fat and vitamin E, talk to your nutritionist before layering oil on top.
