Horses sweat harder and lose more electrolyte per litre than most animals, and a horse that has been hauled six hours in July or worked all day in the heat is short on sodium, chloride and potassium whether or not it looks distressed. Quench Lyte is a straightforward electrolyte formula for putting that back, rather than a vitamin product with a token amount of salt in it. Use it around the events that cause the loss: long hauls, hot humid days, hard work, and the recovery afterward. Follow the label rate — more is not better with electrolytes, and an overdose of salt into a horse that is already dehydrated makes things worse, not better. The single most important rule is water. Electrolytes given to a horse that is not drinking pull fluid into the gut and can deepen dehydration. Always have clean water freely available, and never dose a horse that is refusing to drink without talking to your veterinarian. Some horses will go off a bucket that tastes different, so if you are adding it to water rather than feed, offer a plain bucket alongside it. A horse showing real signs of trouble — dark gums, skin that stays tented, no gut sounds, a stumbling or tucked-up horse after work — needs a veterinarian and likely intravenous fluids, not a scoop of powder. Electrolytes are for keeping a working horse topped up, not for rescuing one that has gone past that.
