Plain ivermectin handles most of what troubles a horse internally — small and large strongyles, ascarids, pinworms, bots, and the larval stages that do the real damage — but it does nothing at all to tapeworm. Praziquantel is what closes that gap, which is why the combination pastes exist. Tapeworm burdens tend to be invisible until they are causing ileal impaction colic, and they do not show reliably on a routine fecal egg count, so most Canadian deworming programs include a praziquantel dose once or twice a year rather than waiting for evidence. One syringe treats a horse up to the weight marked on the barrel. Set the ring before you go in the stall, not while the horse is chewing at your hand. Get the paste well back over the tongue and hold the head up for a few seconds; a horse that spits half a dose onto the shavings has been underdosed, and underdosing is exactly how resistance builds. Ivermectin resistance is real and growing in ascarids in particular, which is why the current thinking has moved away from calendar deworming for everything and toward fecal egg counts to find the horses that actually shed. On most properties a minority of the horses carry the majority of the burden. Your vet can help you sort out which of yours those are. Follow the label for weight, timing, and any cautions on foals, sick, or debilitated horses. Store it out of frost and out of reach of children and pets.
