Disposable nest pads work, but on a coop with several boxes the replacements add up over a laying season. A pad you can rinse and reuse changes that arithmetic, particularly if you are running the same boxes year after year. These measure 12 inches square and come six to a pack, enough for six standard boxes. They are perforated through the mat, which lets moisture drain away instead of sitting under the eggs, and a drier nest is a harder place for bacteria to establish. The surface gives the hen something soft to settle on, which is what keeps eggs from cracking against a wooden box floor. Cleaning is a rinse. Take the pad out, hose it, shake it and put it back, or run a second set through while the first dries so no box sits empty. That is the practical advantage over fibre pads, which have to be thrown away once they are soiled. Check them when you collect. A pad packed with droppings has stopped draining, and a pad that has stopped draining is doing more harm than an empty box would.
