This is the base half of a one-quart chick waterer, moulded in heavy-duty polystyrene and measuring 6 inches across by 1.5 inches high. It threads onto the Little Giant 1-Quart Screw-On Jar, item 692, which is bought separately. The shallow trough is the whole point. Day-old chicks drown in surprisingly little water, and a base only an inch and a half deep gives them somewhere to drink without somewhere to get into trouble. Six inches of diameter also lets a brooder full of chicks spread around it instead of piling on one side. Buying the base on its own makes sense more often than you would think. Jars survive; bases get stood on, knocked off a brooder wall, or cracked when somebody tries to free a frozen one in a hurry. Keeping a spare on the shelf costs little and saves a trip to town in the middle of a hatch. They come in several colours too, so if you run more than one brooder you can colour-code which pen a waterer belongs to and cut down on carrying anything between groups.
