The cap is the piece nobody thinks about until it splits. It takes the whole pull of a feeding calf, it gets dropped on concrete, and once it cracks the nipple will not seat properly no matter how good the nipple is. This is a plain plastic screw ring, about 2 1/2 inches across and a little over half an inch deep, that threads onto the mouth of the standard two and three quart screw-on nursing bottles and holds the nipple flange against the rim. It is sold on its own, which means a cracked cap does not mean a new bottle. If you are ordering replacement parts, work out which piece has actually failed. A leak at the neck is usually the cap or a distorted nipple flange. A leak at the tip is the nipple. Ordering both at once is cheap insurance either way. Check the threads for milk residue when you wash, because that is where it collects and dries hard. Do not overtighten it either; snug is enough, and cranking it down is what starts the cracks.
