There is no warning before a nipple fails. It works fine on the first calf and splits on the second, and by then you are standing in a pen holding a bottle that will not deliver. This is the part to have two of in the cupboard. It measures one inch in diameter and four inches long, the longer draw of the two calf nipple styles. The rubber is a formula intended to stay soft and pliable through washing while holding up to a calf that pulls hard. It presses onto the snap-top nursing bottles rather than threading, so there is no cap ring involved and no threads to cross. Check which bottle you have before ordering. Snap-on and screw-on nipples are not interchangeable, and the two look similar enough in a photo to catch people out. If the bottle mouth has a raised bead and no threads, this is the one. Wash it after each use with a bottle brush, air dry it off the bottle, and replace it as soon as the tip starts to open up. A worn nipple lets milk down too fast, which is worth avoiding in a young calf.
