Deep pails are the wrong shape for a lot of animals. Goats put their front feet in, sheep tip them, and young stock cannot reach the last of a ration without pushing the whole thing across the pen. A wide shallow pan changes the geometry. This one measures about 18 1/2 inches across and only 4 1/2 inches deep, holding roughly three gallons spread over a broad floor. It is moulded from impact-resistant DuraFlex plastic that will not rust or corrode, and an outer rim around the bottom gives it a wider footprint so it sits flat and resists being knocked over. The low profile suits goats, sheep, hogs, alpacas, llamas and dogs, and the width lets more than one animal feed at once without crowding. It doubles as a general utility pan for soaking beet pulp, mixing supplement or watering in a pinch. Plastic in cold weather is more brittle than plastic in July, so tip ice out rather than chipping at it. Otherwise it will take a hard winter and hose clean when you need it to.
