Chicks that walk through an open dish waste more feed than they eat and foul the rest inside a day. A jar feeder fixes that by only exposing what the birds can reach through the holes, and by refilling from an inverted jar rather than an open lid. This is the base half of that arrangement. It is moulded from heavy-duty polypropylene with eight feeding openings around the rim and measures about 6 3/8 inches across by 2 1/2 inches high. Ribs inside the tray slow feed from working over the edge as the birds pick at it. It threads onto the matching one-quart screw-on poultry jar, which is sold separately. If you already have jars from a previous season, the base is usually the part that cracks or wears first, so replacing it alone is the sensible way to keep a set in service. Wash it in warm soapy water between batches and dry it before refilling. Once the chicks are a couple of weeks old, setting it on a block or a low platform keeps litter out of the feed.
