Hatch rates live and die on a degree or two, and the temperature that matters is the one at the top of the eggs, not the one at the lid or the one a built-in gauge is reporting from somewhere else in the cabinet. Opening the incubator to check costs heat and humidity every time. This kit is a mercury-free thermometer mounted on a clear mylar sheet. The sheet holds the thermometer at the level of the eggs, and the graduation marks are large enough to read through the incubator window from outside. Nothing to open, nothing to disturb. It works as a second opinion in a still-air or forced-air unit that already has its own controller, or as the primary reading in a simpler cabinet. Either way, give it a day to settle before you trust it against a controller you have been relying on. Handle the mylar by the edges, keep the glass out of the water channels, and store it flat between hatches so the sheet does not curl.
