Little Giant Chicken Treat Ball 4 Inch
Four-inch powder-coated wire treat ball on a 5.5-inch chain, holding greens and vegetable scraps off the coop floor for hens to pick at.
Details
A four inch ball of powder-coated wire on a five and a half inch chain with a hook. You load it with lettuce, apple pieces, carrot or whatever else the flock is getting, hang it in the coop or run, and let the birds work at it through the openings between the wires. Two things make it worth having. The first is waste: greens thrown on the floor get trampled and buried in litter, and half of them never get eaten. In the ball they stay off the ground until a hen actually pulls a piece through. The second is boredom, which is a genuine problem in a Canadian winter when birds are shut in for weeks at a stretch and start picking at each other. Something to peck at that swings back keeps a flock occupied and cuts down the feather pecking that starts in a confined run. Metal rather than plastic means it stands up to being pecked and swung, and the powder coating keeps rust off in a damp coop. Hang it at about head height for the birds. Too high and they lose interest, too low and it fills with shavings.
