Details
The P8 is the plain two-gallon pail that ends up doing everything on a yard. It is moulded from a polyethylene resin chosen to resist impact, hold its shape against warping and discourage stress cracks, measures 11.5 inches across by 8.5 inches deep, and hangs on a heavy-duty wire bail. Polyethylene is the reason it survives. Rigid, brittle plastics split the first time a full pail hits a frozen yard or gets clipped by a swinging gate. Polyethylene gives a little instead, and the resin is formulated so repeated flexing does not start a crack running from a scuff. That said, no plastic is at its most forgiving at minus thirty. Tip a frozen pail on its side and work the ice loose rather than driving a heel into the bottom. Eight quarts is the size most people reach for first: grain for a horse, water for a pen of calves, a gathering of eggs, teat dip, wash water. It comes in enough colours that the feed pail, the wash pail and the dog pail can be kept visibly separate, which is a small thing that saves arguments in a busy barn.
