The flat back is the whole idea. One side of this two-gallon pail is straight, so it sits tight against a stall wall, a panel or a fence rail instead of swinging out and dumping. It runs 11.5 inches deep by 12 inches wide and 9 inches high, moulded in a polyethylene resin picked for impact resistance and for holding its shape rather than warping. The wire bail is notched, which is what lets it hang square on a hook or a snap and stay there when a horse noses it. A round bucket on a hook rolls, tips and gets pawed off the wall. A flat back with a notched bail stays put and keeps the water off the bedding, which is the practical difference in a box stall or a calving pen. Moulded stacking ribs mean a nested column of them pulls apart instead of wedging solid, something anyone who has fought a jammed stack of pails will appreciate. Two gallons is a sensible stall ration of water or grain. Empty them and turn them over before hard frost, because a pail left with an inch of water in it becomes a pail with a block of ice in it.
