The top is impact-resistant transparent polyethylene so the level shows without lifting, and the base is heavy-duty polyethylene in red. It stands 12 inches across and 16 inches high, with a handle moulded in for carrying. The handle is not a small detail. Three gallons of water is twenty-five pounds, and hauling that from the tap to the coop through snow with a proper grip beats wrestling a slippery jug. The red base is deliberate too. Birds notice red, and a new flock finds the water faster for it. Both halves are polyethylene rather than galvanized steel, so there is no rusted seam to weep and no metallic taste creeping into the water late in its life, and it washes out easily when the inevitable algae shows up in July. In cold weather three gallons freezes into a serious block, so through winter this belongs on a heated base or on a swap-at-chores routine. Do not go at a frozen plastic drinker with a bar. Bring it in, thaw it, and set a fresh one out.
