Details
A 250 watt, 120 volt clear heat lamp bulb with a rated life of 6,000 hours. The bulb is alloy with a non-stick base, which is a detail you come to appreciate the first time you change one that has sat in a damp socket all winter and does not want to let go. Clear gives you heat plus full visible light, which makes it the right choice where the lamp is doing double duty. Over a farrowing pen, a shop bench, or a water line you are trying to keep from freezing up, being able to see what you are doing is worth as much as the heat. Extension guidance is consistent that very bright light over young birds encourages pecking and cannibalism, and red delivers the same heat with less of that stimulation. Keep the clear bulbs for jobs where the light is a feature rather than a problem. Run it only in a fixture rated for at least this wattage, keep it well clear of bedding and anything else that will burn, and give the fixture a proper look over before each season.
