At 22 quarts, or five and a half gallons, this is the big one in the Little Giant flat-back line. Same construction as the smaller sizes: polyethylene, a straight back that sits flush against a wall or panel, and a wire bail notched so it hangs square on a hook or snap. The reason to go to 22 quarts rather than 20 is usually a hard-drinking horse through a hot July, a mare and foal sharing a stall, or a pen where you simply do not want to be back out with the hose at nine at night. It is a slightly unusual size, which is exactly why the people who need it keep coming back for it. Full, it is heavy enough that it should be hung empty and filled in place rather than carried across a barn floor. Give some thought to the hook as well, because a screw eye that was fine for a small pail is now carrying better than forty-five pounds. In winter, tip it out at last chores instead of letting it freeze solid overnight, and if ice does form, thaw it out rather than pounding on cold plastic.
