A 10 quart round bucket, 11.5 inches across and just under 9.5 inches deep, light enough to carry all day but built for farm work rather than the garage. Miller uses an offset sidewall to add strength where a straight-walled pail would flex, and hangs it on a heavy-duty galvanized handle set into moulded eyelets. The galvanized handle is the detail worth having. Bare steel bails rust through at the eyelet, usually while the pail is full, and a thin plastic ear cracks in the cold when a loaded pail swings against a gate post. Galvanizing means the bail is still there in five years, and the eyelet design spreads the load instead of concentrating it on one weak point. A finger grab ring is moulded into the bottom so you can get a second hand under it and pour without slopping, which is the difference between filling a feeder cleanly and wearing half a pail of chop. Ten quarts is a good all-round size: grain for a couple of horses, a manageable weight in water, and short enough to fit under a yard tap. Rinse it out before it freezes and any plastic pail lasts longer.
