Marking spray for temporary identification, in black, with an upright tip so you spray with the can the right way up instead of inverted like fence paint. That sounds like a small thing until you have marked forty head in a row and your wrist has an opinion about it. Spray marking is quicker than a stick when a lot of animals are moving through a chute and the mark has to read from a distance. Black works well on light-coloured cattle, on white tags, and anywhere a fluorescent would simply get lost. It is a temporary mark rather than identification, so it works alongside your tags, not instead of them. Shake it properly before you start and again partway through. Cold cans spray badly, so keep it in the cab or inside the barn on a winter morning rather than leaving it in the box overnight. Clear the nozzle with a short burst at the end of the day so it does not gum up, and store the can upright somewhere it will not freeze.
