Six quarts is the volume size. If you are hand-feeding a string of horses, filling several bunks, or moving pellets out of a bulk bin, the extra capacity is the difference between one trip and three. This is a scoop for moving feed rather than measuring it; keep a smaller one on hand for supplements and minerals. Loaded, it carries real weight, which is exactly why the construction matters. The body is pressed galvanized steel, so it will not flex and dump when you drive it into packed grain, and it will not go brittle in a cold bin the way a plastic scoop does. The zinc coating keeps rust out of the feed and off your hands through damp fall weather and a long winter of condensation. The handle is enclosed rather than open, so with a full scoop your hand is not sliding off the end of it. The flat base keeps the scoop standing where you set it down. One habit worth building: knock it out and hang it after chores. Feed left sitting in a scoop draws mice, and mice in the feed room is a problem that always starts small.
