Two quarts is the size you reach for when you are measuring rather than moving. Grain for a pen of birds, a supplement top-dress, minerals into a tub, a dog ration off the bulk bag; jobs where an accurate scoop beats a big one. It is pressed from galvanized steel, which is the traditional answer for feed handling and still the right one. Plastic scoops go stiff and crack at the handle when the temperature drops, and most acreages have one in the bin with the handle already snapped off. Steel does not care what the thermometer says, and the zinc coating keeps rust out of the feed even when the scoop lives in a damp bin all winter. The handle is enclosed rather than open, so a gloved hand goes in and stays in when the scoop is loaded. The base is flat, which means it sits level on a bench or on the lip of a barrel instead of tipping its contents back into the bin. Scrape it out and hang it dry after chores and it will outlast the pail it lives in.
