A fly stick is a rigid tube, roughly two feet long, coated all around with a baited adhesive. Compared with a ribbon it holds far more flies before it is used up, it does not tangle or blow into itself, and it can be hung, laid on a beam, or set in a bracket — which makes it much more practical in a windy alleyway or a shop with a fan running. In a horse barn, a milkhouse or a poultry building, one stick often replaces several ribbons. The attractant in the coating gives it real pulling power, and the capacity is what makes it worth the higher price than a paper ribbon: in a heavy fly year a stick keeps working for weeks where a ribbon is full in days. It contains no insecticide, which is the reason to choose it in a feed room, over a stall, or anywhere you would rather not put a chemical. Get the placement right and it works remarkably well. Flies want warmth, light and shelter from wind. Hang sticks high, near sunlit windows, along rafters, and above where flies actually rest, and use several in a big space rather than one in the middle. Reposition as the sun angle changes through the summer. Handle it with gloves and hang it where nothing you care about will brush past — the adhesive is very difficult to remove from hair, clothing and feathers, and barn birds can get caught. As with any trap, it takes adults off the wing but does nothing about the manure, spilled feed or wet bedding they hatched in. Source control is still where the real gains are.
