A pack of four ribbons is the honest way to buy these, because one is never enough. The scent coating on the adhesive gives them a little more pull than a plain strip, and the rest is unchanged from what has worked for a century: a coil of sticky paper hung where flies gather, catching everything that lands. No active ingredient, no resistance, nothing to keep away from feed. Hang them high, in sunlight, out of the wind, and put up more than you think you need. Flies concentrate in warm bright places and rest on ceilings, rafters and near windows, so a ribbon in a shaded corner at head height catches almost nothing while one two feet under a sunlit rafter fills up. In a tack room or milkhouse where you would rather not use chemicals at all, ribbons are the right tool rather than a compromise. Change them when they are covered. A full ribbon is finished — the surface is used up and it is not catching anything more, however unpleasant it looks. Four in a pack means you can rotate through a season without a trip to town. Practical warnings that are worth heeding: this glue does not come off hair, feathers, skin or clothing easily, so hang ribbons where horses, cattle, pets and people cannot walk into them, and be mindful of barn swallows and bats sharing the space. Unroll them slowly and away from anything you care about. And remember that ribbons catch adults only — the flies you are seeing came from wet manure or spilled feed somewhere close by, and cleaning that up does more than any trap.
