Magnets and Boluses
A cow magnet is given by mouth with a balling gun and sits in the reticulum, where it is designed to hold wire, nails and other metal an animal has swallowed with its feed. Pipestone Farm Supply lists four Sundown rumen magnets for cattle: the Black Max cow magnet, the Ferri-Max cow magnet, the Power Plate cow magnet and the Silver Star cow magnet, which differ in shape, casing and magnetic material. Give one magnet per animal, once, and check first whether an animal already carries one by holding a compass or a second magnet against the lower left flank. Ask your veterinarian when to give magnets in your herd, commonly at weaning or when heifers join the breeding herd, and about hardware disease if an animal goes off feed. Pick up at the Millet, Alberta store or order online for Canada-wide shipping.
