Sundown ferri-max cow magnet
Cow magnet for oral administration — hardware disease prevention that stays in the reticulum for the animal's lifetime.
Details
This is one of several magnet patterns in the lineup, and the difference between them is mostly physical: length, diameter, weight, and whether the magnet is a solid alnico body or an assembly of ceramic ring magnets on a core. All of them do the same job, which is sitting in the reticulum and holding whatever ferrous metal the animal swallows so it cannot work through the wall. Hardware disease is a quiet problem. A cow that has picked up a nail may show nothing more than going off feed, standing with an arched back, grunting when she gets up, and a drop in production — signs that look like a dozen other things. By the time it is obvious, the wire has usually already done its damage. The economics of a magnet against the cost of one lost cow are not close. Give one per animal with a balling gun, and record it, because there is no way to tell later from the outside whether an animal has one. Some producers dose replacement heifers as a matter of course at the same time as vaccinations or implants. If you are working with older cows of unknown history, one more magnet does no harm. Which pattern to choose comes down to what feeds smoothly through your balling gun and the size of animal you are dosing — check the listed dimensions, and ask if you want a recommendation. Keep magnets away from electronics, magnetic-stripe cards and pacemakers, and store them separated from each other and from loose steel, or you will spend more time separating magnets than dosing cattle.
