The XL-bander exists because a mid size tool applied to a large animal is a compromise, and compromises in this particular job are expensive. It gives you more spread and more tension, which is what larger and older stock require. At $259.90 it is a real purchase, and it is the right one if you are regularly handling animals past the size where a Tri-bander does clean work. If most of what you do is young calves, the Tri-bander is the tool and this is more than you need. Uses XL-bander rings, sold separately in 25 and 50 packs. The rings are heavier and higher tension than Tri-bander rings and the two are not interchangeable, so order rings that match the tool. Follow accepted technique and the pain control and timing expectations that apply to the age and size of animal in front of you. In Canada that ground is covered by the Codes of Practice, the expectations around older animals are stricter than they used to be, and your veterinarian is the right person to confirm what your operation needs to be doing.
