Fly bait works on a different principle from a spray. Instead of trying to contact every fly, it uses a sugar-based attractant to bring them to the insecticide, so a small amount of product placed in the right spot can drop the adult population in a building noticeably within hours. In a shed, shop, or barn alleyway where flies are thick, it is one of the quickest tools there is. Use it in a bait station rather than scattered loose, and put it where flies actually are: warm, sunny, sheltered spots near their resting surfaces. Baits stop pulling once the attractant weathers or the bait gets wet, so a station keeps it dry and working and lets you shift it as the sun moves through the season. Take the toxicity seriously. Fly baits are formulated to smell and taste appealing, and the actives used in them are variously highly toxic to dogs, cats, poultry and wild birds — the combination of an attractive smell and a potent insecticide is exactly why these products have caused so many accidental poisonings. Read the label for the active ingredient and its specific cautions, keep bait out of any place a pet, chicken or livestock animal can reach, keep it well away from feed and water, and never place it where children play. If an animal gets into it, that is an immediate call to a veterinarian with the label in your hand. Bait is also a knockdown, not a program. Flies breed in wet manure, spoiled feed and damp bedding, and adult control alone means starting over every three weeks. Cleaning up breeding sites is the part that actually lowers numbers, with bait handling what is already on the wing.
