Elemental sulfur in powder form is about as old a remedy as exists in animal husbandry. It is the yellow powder behind lime-sulfur dips, the sulfur-and-pine-tar hoof packings, and countless homemade dusting mixes. Its usefulness comes from being mildly keratolytic and antiparasitic on contact — it softens and lifts scaly skin and is unfriendly to the mites and fungi that live in it. A 1.5 kg bag is a working quantity for mixing rather than a single application. Most traditional uses combine it with something that carries and holds it: petrolatum or oil for a salve, pine tar and glycerin for hooves, or lime and water for the dips used against mange and ringworm. Two honest cautions. First, sulfur preparations are traditional rather than registered veterinary treatments for most of what people use them for, and a persistent skin problem deserves a diagnosis before it gets a folk remedy — mange, ringworm, lice, rain scald and allergic dermatitis look similar and do not respond to the same things. Your veterinarian can scrape or culture and tell you which you are fighting. Second, sulfur is an irritant on broken skin and in the eyes, and lime-sulfur mixes are considerably harsher than sulfur alone. Test a small area, and never combine it with anything containing chlorine bleach. Powdered sulfur is combustible as a fine dust, so keep it away from open flame, sparks and hot work. Store it sealed, dry and cool. Wear a dust mask when you are mixing a batch — the powder gets everywhere and it is unpleasant to breathe.
