Pine tar is what you get from destructively distilling pine wood: a thick, black, strong-smelling material that has been used on hooves, hides and wooden ships for a very long time. It is used in barns mainly for two things — packing and dressing hooves, and as a tough, water-shedding cover over an area you want to keep clean and dry. It sticks, it stays put through mud and manure, and its smell is enough to discourage some picking and pecking behaviour. Where it earns its keep is on a sound but shelly, cracking hoof, and in the traditional pine tar and glycerin or pine tar and sulfur mixes that generations of horsemen have painted onto soles and frogs. It also gets used on poultry to break a pecking habit and over a hoof or claw you want sealed against wet ground. Be clear-eyed about the limits. Pine tar is not a treatment for infection, and its water resistance cuts both ways: painted over a puncture, an abscess, or a wound that needs to drain, it seals bacteria in. Anything deep, hot, swollen, or lame needs to be opened, cleaned and assessed — often by a vet or farrier — before you cover it. And a hoof that is soft and rotting from standing in wet does not need a moisture barrier over the top so much as dry footing. It is genuinely messy. Wear gloves, keep it off good clothing and vet wrap you want to reuse, and expect the smell to linger. Store the tin closed and out of the sun; it thickens in cold and is far easier to brush on warm.
