Weaning day is the noisy one. Calves pulled straight off the cow bawl, pace fences, quit eating and walk off condition at exactly the point in the year you want them gaining. Two-stage weaning gets at that by separating the sucking from the separation. The flap hangs in the calf's nostrils and works as a physical barrier, so he cannot get a teat into his mouth. It does not pierce the septum, and it goes in during an ordinary run through the chute, which means it fits alongside vaccinating or pouring rather than adding a handling of its own. The yellow flap suits calves in the 400 to 700 pound range and has been used on animals from around 200 pounds up to 900; a larger size is made for very big calves. The manufacturer reports retention better than 95 percent. Leave them in four to seven days, then pull the flaps and move the calves. Research found similar reductions in bawling and pacing at four days as at fourteen, and the shorter period means fewer flaps lost and fewer calves working out how to suck around them. Calves keep grazing and drinking normally while wearing one. They are reusable. Wash and disinfect them between groups, store them out of direct sunlight, and a bag of 25 will run through a lot of calves before it is used up.
