Details
A 25 g syringe is the format for treating one animal without opening a jug you will not finish. Fenbendazole in paste form goes in over the tongue, and because the syringe is graduated you can set it to the weight in front of you rather than estimating out of a drench gun. For a single goat, a calf, or a small string of animals, it wastes far less product than the liquid does. Fenbendazole is a benzimidazole, which matters mostly because it is not an ivermectin. Rotating between chemical classes — rather than between brand names that share an active ingredient — is the only rotation that means anything, and a lot of producers rotate in name only. If everything you have used for three years has ended in "-mectin," this is a different class. Weigh, or at least tape, before you dose. Underdosing is the fastest way to select for resistant worms, and eyeballing weight on a growing animal reliably underestimates it. Read the label for the species and class you are treating, and mind the withdrawal periods if the animal is destined for meat or milk. Store the syringe capped, out of sun and frost. Paste that has frozen and thawed can separate, and a syringe with a cracked plunger is a mess in a pen. If you are treating for something you have not confirmed — or if an animal is thin, scouring, and not responding — a fecal sample and a call to your vet will get you further than another tube.
