Hypertonic saline is a specific tool for a specific emergency. At 7.2% it is far saltier than blood, and the reason that is useful is that a relatively small volume pulls fluid out of the body's tissues and back into circulation quickly. In a badly dehydrated, shocky calf or cow, that buys blood pressure and time in minutes, where getting the same effect from ordinary isotonic fluids would mean many litres and a long drip. The catch is that it is a bridge, not a treatment. Hypertonic saline moves existing body water around — it does not add any. The animal is still just as dehydrated a few minutes later, and the standard protocol is to follow it immediately with oral or intravenous fluids to actually replace what is missing. Give hypertonic saline and then walk away and you can leave an animal worse off than before. That makes this a product to stock because your veterinarian has put it in your protocol and shown you the follow-up, not because it sounds like a good thing to have. Rate matters — given too quickly it can cause serious cardiovascular problems — and so do the situations where it is contraindicated. Those are veterinary decisions. Inspect the bottle before use and set it aside if the solution is cloudy, discoloured, has particles, or the seal is compromised. Warm it toward body temperature before giving it to a cold animal. Store at room temperature, protected from freezing, and keep the injection port clean.
