Details
Dextrose 50% is concentrated sugar in sterile water, and it is one of the fluids a large-animal veterinarian is most likely to ask you to have on hand. The classic uses are the animal that has gone hypoglycemic — a chilled newborn, a ketotic fresh cow — and as an energy component when a larger fluid plan is being built. It works fast, because there is nothing for the body to break down first. The concentration is exactly why it demands care. At 50% this solution is far more concentrated than blood, and given the wrong way it damages tissue: outside the vein it causes swelling, pain and sloughing, and given too fast intravenously it can cause its own problems. Most protocols call for it to be diluted or given slowly into a large, well-secured vein, and getting that right is a veterinarian's call — not something to work out from a bottle label in a cold barn at two in the morning. Which is the honest framing for a product like this: buy it because your vet has told you to have it and has shown you how they want it used on your operation. Route, volume, rate, dilution and the decision to treat at all should come from them. If you are guessing, you are as likely to hurt the animal as help it. Check the bottle before you draw anything up. Discard it if the solution is cloudy, has crystals or visible particles, if the seal is broken, or if it is past date. Store it at room temperature out of frost — a bottle that has frozen may have crystallized out of solution — and keep needles and the bottle top clean.
