The reason to use a handle rather than your hands is that a chain wrapped around a fist gives you neither grip nor control, and the pull you generate that way is jerky where it needs to be steady. A handle hooks onto the chain at whatever link you want and lets you pull in line with it. The polygrip is the part that matters once everything is wet. Bare steel handles go slick with fluid, and a hand slipping off mid pull is how people end up on their backs in a calving pen. Hooking on anywhere along the chain is genuinely useful. You can take up slack without repositioning the chain on the leg, and the placement on the leg is exactly the thing you do not want to be fiddling with once it is set correctly. Clean and disinfect between calvings. And the usual caution: steady traction timed with the cow, and when a calf is not progressing under a reasonable pull, that is a call to your veterinarian rather than a reason to add another handle and another person to it.
