A stethoscope is how you separate a calf that is simply off feed from a calf with pneumonia, and how you tell a rumen that is still working from one that has quit. For this money there is no good reason not to have one in the treatment kit. Single head means one bell rather than a dual bell-and-diaphragm chest piece. It is less versatile than a dual head, but on cattle, sheep and pigs it does the work: lung sounds behind the elbow and up under the shoulder blade, heart low on the left behind the elbow, rumen high on the left flank. The tubing is short enough not to drag and long enough to keep your ear well away from a hind foot. Learn what normal sounds like before you need to know what abnormal sounds like. Listen to five healthy animals of the class you run, on both sides, somewhere quiet. After that the crackle, the wheeze, the fluid, or the silence where a rumen should be turning over actually means something to you. Wipe the ear tips and the bell with alcohol between animals and keep it out of the sun and out of the bottom of the toolbox, because tubing hardens and cracks and a cracked tube leaks sound.
