The number 4 handle is the large-blade handle. It takes the 20, 21, 22 and 24 blade range that most livestock work uses, and it will not accept the small 10 or 11 blades, which fit a number 3. Check the numbers on the blade box before you order the handle. It is wider and heavier than a number 3, and that is not just about fitting a bigger blade. On tough hide you need a handle you can hold firmly through a full stroke without it rolling in wet fingers, and the extra mass makes the cut steadier. This is the handle for the jobs where you are actually cutting through something: hide, abscess walls, thick tissue. Solid stainless means autoclave, boil or disinfectant soak with no consequences, and nothing wears out but the blade slot. Paired with a hundred-count box of blades, it means every cut you make is made with a fresh edge, which is the difference between parting tissue and tearing it. Fit and strip blades with a needle driver or pliers rather than fingers, and always pull the blade away from yourself. Used blades go into a sharps container, not a garbage bag. Restraint, clean prep and knowing when to stop and call your veterinarian matter more than the instrument does.
