Get the handle number right and everything else is easy. A number 3 handle takes the small blade range, which means the 10, the 11, the 12 and the 15. If the blades you buy are numbered in the twenties, you want a number 4 handle instead, and no amount of pressing will make them fit. This is the handle for fine work: lancing an abscess with a 11, opening skin with a 10, working a hooked 12 into something you need to cut from underneath. It is short, flat and light, and because it is solid stainless it takes autoclaving, boiling or a soak in disinfectant without complaint. There is nothing to wear out except the blade slot itself. A reusable handle plus a box of blades is the cheapest way to always have a genuinely sharp edge in the kit, and sharp is the whole point. A fresh blade parts tissue cleanly with almost no pressure, which means less trauma and better healing than sawing with something dull. Mount and remove blades with a needle driver or pliers, never bare fingers, and pull the blade off pointing away from you. Blades go straight into a sharps container. Cutting on a live animal deserves proper restraint, clean preparation, and a phone call to your veterinarian when you are past what you know.
