Details
The number 11 is a straight blade that comes to a fine point, sharpened along the straight edge. You do not draw it through tissue the way you do a curved blade. You push the point in and pull down, which is exactly what lancing an abscess requires and why this is the blade most farms go through fastest. That shape also makes it the one for any small precise stab: opening a pocket, starting an incision you will extend with something else, nicking through a tight layer without cutting what is underneath. It is the most useful blade in the box for a lot of people and the least useful for long incisions, because it has almost no belly. A hundred sterile individually sealed blades on a reusable number 3 handle is the cheap way to always have a genuinely sharp point available. A dull 11 will not enter cleanly and you will end up leaning on it, which is where accidents happen. These fit a number 3 handle. A number 4 takes blades in the twenties. Mount and strip with pliers or a needle driver, never fingers, and pull the blade away from yourself. Sharps go in a sharps container. Before you open anything that is hot, hard, near a joint, or on the face, phone your veterinarian.
