The difference between this and the plain sling is the strapping. Front and rear straps hold the calf's shoulders and hindquarters in place, so instead of relying on the calf being too new and too weak to object, you have actual restraint. That matters more than it sounds like it should. A newborn in the first hour is easy. A calf that is a day old, dry, and has found its legs is a different animal, and one that half kicks its way out of a sling three feet off the ground is a hurt calf and a bad afternoon. If your weighing does not always happen immediately at birth, this is the version to own. It also gives you a steadier reading. A calf swinging and struggling makes a scale wander and you end up recording whatever number you happened to catch, which quietly undermines the whole reason you are weighing in the first place. The cost is a little more time putting it on. That is a fair trade. Zero the scale with the empty sling hanging so sling weight stays out of your records. Watch where the cow is before you pick up her calf. Rinse and dry it after use, and inspect the stitching, the buckles and the lifting loop at the start of every calving season, because that is where the load goes.
