Sixty inches gives you room to work. You can place both legs off the one chain, or reach well in on a big cow and still have plenty in your hand, which is exactly the situation where a shorter chain leaves you working at the limit of your grip. The extra length is not free. A long chain is more to manage in a tight space and more to keep out of the muck, which is why plenty of people keep a sixty for the difficult ones and a forty five for everything else. Disinfect it between cows and hang it to dry. Chain cleans properly in a way rope does not, and that entire advantage evaporates if it goes away dirty. Place it above the fetlock with a half hitch below rather than cinching a single loop onto a joint. Length buys you options, not strength. If a calf is not coming under steady traction from a reasonable pull, that is a veterinary call, and extra chain does not change it.
