The dosing nut is what makes this different from a disposable syringe. You set the plunger stop once for the dose you want and then every pull draws the same amount, so you are not squinting at graduations for animal number forty of the afternoon. On a run of lambs or kids that is both faster and more accurate. Five millilitres is the small-stock and small-dose size. Most sheep and goat vaccines land in the one to two millilitre range and a lot of injectables for young calves are similar, and trying to measure two millilitres in a twenty millilitre barrel is how doses drift. Buy the barrel that matches the dose you actually give. Nylon rather than glass or single-use plastic means it takes being dropped in a chute and can be washed and reused for years. Luer lock threads mean the needle stays on when you are pushing a thick product, instead of coming off in the animal. Wash it in hot water only. Soap and disinfectant residue will kill a modified live vaccine, which is the most common way a whole day's vaccinating ends up doing nothing. Pull it apart to dry, and replace the O-ring when the plunger starts to feel loose. Dose, route, site and product choice come from the label or your veterinarian.
