Sized up from the calf slings, this one is for the heavier animals: big beef calves, older lambs and goats, and anything past what a regular sling will safely hold. Support comes from the body of the sling with the legs hanging free, and it hangs off a scale hook the same way. The reason to buy the large rather than making the regular work is not comfort, it is safety. A sling that is too small concentrates all the weight into a narrow band across the animal's belly, which is both hard on the animal and hard on the stitching. Slings fail at the seams, and they fail when they are overloaded. Because it is bigger, it is also more work to load an animal into on your own. Two people is easier, and having the scale hung at the right height before you start is most of the battle. Know your scale's capacity as well as the sling's. It is easy to buy a larger sling and forget that the hanging scale it goes on has a limit. Zero the scale with the empty sling in place so its weight stays out of your records. Rinse it and let it dry rather than folding it away wet, and check every seam and the lifting loop before each season. Any fraying at the load points means it is done.
